Teachers create a democratic classroom where everyone has a voice. We value a strong group dynamic and give students the opportunity to build trust with us and with each other.
Students make all of the creative decisions. The students do all the work. Teachers keep them on task. Teachers facilitate the process and encourage critical thinking along the way. Students are encouraged to make movies based on their own experiences- what they know.
The learning is hands-on and activity-based. We do not lecture. Students start working with the cameras immediately. Students are trained in all aspects of production.
Students learn the basics of media literacy by making media and by questioning what messages they are sending in the process. Students are asked to consider the audience and what they hope the audience will leave with. No censorship. Just questions about intent, audience, distribution.
HIGH PRODUCTION VALUES
There is an emphasis on high production values and a high quality final product-. We want students to be proud of their work. We discourage the skit look by encouraging accurate casting, location, and costumes. Students work with the camera's manual functions as much as possible. As often as possible, work is shared with an audience at the end of a project.
